Last.fm Similar Artists

Discover and playlist artists similar to one you already like. Track Down queries Last.fm's similar-artist graph for up to 250 results — Last.fm's own ceiling on that endpoint — and finds a matching Spotify track for each one.

Step 1 — Enter your input

More tracks = same request, just a longer wait — there's no extra cost to asking for the max.

You'll be redirected to Spotify to approve access, then brought right back here.

How does Last.fm Similar Artists work?

Enter one artist you like and Track Down finds artists similar to them using Last.fm's similar-artist graph, then finds the single best-matching Spotify track for each similar artist — a fast way to discover and playlist adjacent artists you don't already know.

Steps

  1. 1Enter one artist name.
  2. 2Track Down calls Last.fm's artist.getsimilar endpoint (with autocorrect enabled to fix minor spelling) and retrieves up to 250 similar artists — Last.fm's own server-side cap on that endpoint, verified directly against its API.
  3. 3For each similar artist, Track Down searches Spotify by artist name and scores the top 3 results using artist-name overlap only, since there's no specific target track to compare against.
  4. 4Save the best match per artist to a new or existing Spotify playlist.

Frequently asked questions

How is Similar Artists different from Track Radio?

Similar Artists takes one artist name and returns other artists like them, one track each. Track Radio takes one or more specific songs and returns similar individual tracks, which can include multiple songs from the same artist.

Why does this only return one track per artist instead of their whole discography?

The goal is breadth — introducing you to many similar artists in one playlist — rather than depth on any single one. Use the Artist Top Tracks source afterward if you want more from an artist you discover here.

Does the matching work differently here than for other sources?

Yes. Since there's no target song to compare against, Track Down scores candidates on artist-name overlap alone (scoreArtistOnly), instead of the 40/40/20 artist/track/character formula used everywhere a specific track is being matched.
